American naval admiral (1806-1863) who commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Civil War. After his promotion to rear admiral, Foote was on his way to take command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron when he died en route on June 26, 1863. Civil War-era ALS signed "A. H. Foote," one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 9.5, April 3, 1861. Handwritten letter to a naval engineer. In full: "You will return forthwith to this station and report to me for duty in the US Steamer 'Powhasan,' which will sail on Friday afternoon." In fine condition, with some light edge toning.
