Naval leader (1809-1870) who headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the Civil War and developed a number of guns and cannons. Civil War-era ALS signed "J. A. Dahlgren," one page, 4.75 x 7.5, April 2, [circa 1863]. Handwritten letter to General Joseph Hooker, in full: "I am much obliged to you for your polite attention in regard to another nine inch gun discovered by your men." Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 17.75 x 13.75. In fine condition.
