Description

American military officer (1818-1898) who served in the Seminole, Mexican-American, and Civil Wars. His actions in the last were the source of much controversy, and he was ultimately relieved of command for his failure to pursue Bragg's withdrawal following the Battle of Perryville in 1862. ALS signed "D. C. Buell," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, November 13, 1875. Handwritten letter to the publishers of The History of the Civil War. In part: "I had some information concerning Chaplain Van Harris' work before its publication was announced; so that I had pretty well anticipated its character before seeing the portion which you have been kind enough to send me. Judging by that portion, I find that it is written in an calm temper…and not, at best, in that coarseness of style, and with that recklessness of assertion which characterizes many of the personal histories that have grown out of our Civil War…Besides, the prominent character and myself (I of course mean General Thomas) were friends of long standing." In fine condition.
