Regent of Scotland from 1572–78 (during the minority of King James VI of Scotland (i.e., James I of England). A leader in murder of David Ruzzio, the favorite of Mary Queen of Scots. As regent he crushed a rebellion by Mary’s supporters. Later found guilty of being involved in the murder of Lord Henry Darnley, second husband of Mary Queen of Scots and father of King James VI (James I England). LS signed “James Regent,” one page, 8 x 12.75, July 18, 1573. Letter to the Laird of Barnbarroch, respecting the arrest of certain lawless persons in Wigtoun. In part: “… certain men of Wigton…for a long time past have not given such obedience to the King’s authority as was required, we are therefore most desirous that you will effectually concur, and fortify and assist the officials directed for this effort." The seal of the regent is attached to the reverse. In very good to fine condition, with overall soiling and multiple ancient repairs.
