American lawyer (1818-1891) best known as Lincoln's law partner from 1841. He later wrote a biography of Lincoln, Herndon's Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life, which provided an important up-close account of Lincoln's career in law and politics. DS, signed “Herndon & Zane,” four pages, 8 x 12.5, May 20, 1863. Lengthy handwritten legal document containing about 750 words in Herndon’s hand, to be filed in "the Circuit Court of Sangamon County," concerning the dissolution of a partnership between Patrick V. Lannegan and Joseph Burrell. In fine condition, with some minor edge chipping affecting a single word of text.
Charles S. Zane (1831-1915) replaced Lincoln as Herndon’s law partner after Lincoln became President. He was City Attorney for Springfield three times and was Chief Justice of the Utah Territory Supreme Court from 1884-94 and the first (ever) Chief Justice of Utah’s Supreme Court after statehood, serving from 1896-99.
