Description

"I have just been asked to see the picture itself. How very fine it is"

Distinguished American-born artist (1856-1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “John S. Sargent,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, 31 Tite Street letterhead, postmarked March 22, 1905. Handwritten letter to the widow of the English poet and literary critic John Addington Symonds, in full: “It is very kind of you to have taken the trouble to send your book, and I am sorry you should have had the bother, for, as it turns out, I have just been asked to see the picture itself. How very fine it is. I return the book to you without having disturbed the wrapper.” In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
