Signed book: Memoirs by Harry S. Truman, Volume Two: Years of Trial and Hope. Special deluxe limited edition of 500 unnumbered copies, bound in blue cloth with top edge gilt. Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1956. Hardcover with acetate jacket, 6.25 x 9.5, 594 pages. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in fountain pen, "To Honorable Tom Connally, from Harry S. Truman, 5/5/56." In fine condition.
Doubleday originally prepared 500 deluxe sets of Truman's memoirs to be sold to the public as a signed limited edition; however, Truman had no desire to profit from his autograph and declined to participate. Doubleday sent him the complete run of the deluxe version, which he signed and presented to friends and dignitaries over the years. This desirable example of the second volume, lacking its slipcase, was presented to former Senator Tom Connally of Texas, who had been a chief advocate for the 'Truman Doctrine' in Congress.
