American politician, historian, and publisher (1790-1868) who served as Mayor of Washington, DC, in the 1830s. Force assembled and published an extensive collection of documents from the Revolutionary War under the title American Archives, which included a copy of the Declaration of Independence made from the original copper plates engraved by William J. Stone in 1823. Partly-printed DS, signed “Peter Force, Mayor,” one page both sides, 8 x 13, February 8, 1838. Document relating to the sale of a parcel of land in Washington for non-payment of taxes, boldly and prominently signed at the conclusion in ink by Force as mayor. In very good to fine condition, with partial splitting to folds.
