Baptist minister and civil rights leader (1894–1984) who mentored many influential activists, including Martin Luther King Jr., Julian Bond, Maynard Jackson, and Donn Clendenon; he served as president of Morehouse College from 1940 to 1967, and delivered a stirring eulogy for Martin Luther King, Jr., now known as the 'No Man is Ahead of His Time' speech. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Morehouse College letterhead, June 8, 1967. Letter to Betty M. Harris, chairman of Atlantans for Peace, in part: "It was indeed kind of you to write…expressing appreciation for my work here at the College. I too was appreciative of the honor bestowed upon me when the Mayor proclaimed May 31, 1967 as 'Benjamin E. Mays Day.'" In fine condition, with small dings to the right edge, and file holes to the left edge.
