Winner’s medal issued for the German Olympic trials prior to the canceled Berlin 1916 Summer Olympics. Gilt bronze, 50 mm, 54 gm. The front features a bust of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany; the reverse reads (translated), “The Winner in the Olympic Trial Contest,” with “The German Committee for the Olympic Games” around the perimeter. The 1916 Olympics were scheduled to be held in Berlin, Germany, but were eventually canceled due to the outbreak of World War I. Any memorabilia related to the 1916 Olympiad is thus quite uncommon, with this being a particularly attractive example.
