Description

Contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements (1890–1976) best known for his experimental photography. ANS signed "Salutations, Man Ray," in the margin of a letter sent to him, one page, 8.5 x 10.75, Dynamo Editions letterhead, September 4, 1965. Man Ray replies to an inquiry regarding reproduction of one of his famous portraits of Erik Satie, writing (translated): "Dear Sir, you have my authorization. I have no other memory than what's written in my 'Autoportrait' p. 112." The original letter, signed by Pierre Aelberts, in part (translated): "Would you be kind enough to authorize me to reproduce the portrait of Erik Satie figuring in your autobiography p. 112, as I am writing a little book on this composer. I am trying to find his complete correspondence, and if you own anything, please send me the content, or any other document or information about him." In fine condition.

In 1921, Satie met Man Ray, who had just arrived in France without speaking a word of French. Satie helped the painter find some material to compose a new work of art from kitchen utensils, which would become 'The Gift'—and was the first dadaist work of art that Man Ray ever produced.
