Description

Flown limited edition FDC with a cachet honoring the ‘World’s First Air Mail Flight,’ made by John Wise for the US Post Office in 1859, numbered 7 of 123 carried by balloonist Don Piccard on August 17, 1959, when he flew a red, white, and blue balloon basket at a centennial commemoration of Wise's Jupiter balloon flight of United States mail. The cover, postmarked in Lafayette, Indiana, on the date of Piccard’s flight, is signed above his designated autograph line in fountain pen by Dwight D. Eisenhower as president. The cover is also signed in ink by six others, including Piccard and Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield. In very fine condition.
