Signed book: God's First World. First edition. NY: Harper & Row, 1970. Hardcover with dust jacket, 10 x 8.25, 45 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in black felt tip with a playful dialogue, "Fred: Sam, can I borrow some overlay?, Sam: Sure thing, Fred., Fred: Thanks, Sam., Sam: You're vellum. To Betty & Sam—Fred Gwynne, Oct. 1970." In very good to fine condition, with light foxing and toning to the end papers and dust jacket. Consignor notes that Gwynne signed the book for a friend, the noted equestrian artist Sam Savitt.
Though best known for his classic television roles—most notably as Herman Munster on The Munsters—Fred Gwynne wrote and illustrated children's books, which often achieved great popularity amongst adults. In this sardonic and surprising book of large drawings and few words, Gwynne 'pictures God's world as He created it: a globe covered with concrete, highways, oil wells, skyscrapers. God's last creation is Man, and contrary to God's orders, Man proceeds to blow up the concrete, the cities, etc., and terrible creature that he is, plants trees and creates Eden.'
