Partly-printed DS as president, signed "U. S. Grant," one page, 8.25 x 9.75, April 25, 1872. President Grant orders the Secretary of State to "to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of John Rhodes, John Stuart and Thomas Vickers alias Texas." Neatly signed at the conclusion in purple ink by President Ulysses S. Grant. In fine condition, with light toning to the top third of the page.
The three men were convicted of assault, robbery, and burglary, and sentenced to ten years in prison, but were pardoned by Grant at the recommendation of the district attorney after completing four and a half years of the sentence. An intriguing background for a document beautifully signed by the 18th president.
