Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 13.75 x 16.75, July 8, 1859. President Buchanan appoints Weld Noble Allen “a Passed Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by James Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Isaac Toucey. The original orange Navy Department seal remains affixed to the lower vignette. In fine condition, with a small repaired hole to the right edge. Allen (1837-1875) graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1855 and commanded a navy gunboat in the Civil War as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron.
