Description

Three ALSs from President Grover Cleveland to his wife, First Lady Frances Cleveland, each signed “Grover Cleveland” or “G. C.,” 11 total pages, penned on 5 x 8 Executive Mansion letterhead, dated to June and July of 1894. Highlighted passages from each letter are as follows:

June 8th: “I was glad to receive your dispatch this afternoon and to know that you and the children had arrived safely at Gray Gables after a pleasant trip…I went hiking yesterday…I have been taking plenty of medicine but…I have no appetite to speak of and have not eaten what altogether would amount to a good square meal in a week…I miss you horribly…The way I am living now is very much like ‘camping out’ but I like it and am enjoying myself hugely.”

June 19th: “I improved so slowly on my trip that I…hour after hour wondering if mountain air instead of sea air was much better suited to me. Yesterday however I gained a great deal and am feeling now quite well barring a little weakness…I want to see my wife and babies and for that purpose I long to see Gray Gables.”

July 20th: “I am in a war with the Senate and the members of that…body are very mad today. I guess I have managed to postpone for some time my action on the tariff and consequently our adjournment and the opportunity to see my wife and children.” In overall very good to fine condition, with wrinkling, a few small stains, and some splitting to the folds. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the last letter, addressed by President Cleveland to “Mrs. Grover Celevland, Buzzard’s Bay, Mass."
