Description

Dress worn by Joni Mitchell on the cover of her 1977 double album Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter

Joni Mitchell's black dress worn on the cover of her 1977 album Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, as well as on both inner sleeves of the album. The black dress features gold highlights throughout, sheer short sleeves, and an elastic waist, with a "Janice Wainwright at Forty Seven Poland Street" tag sewn inside the collar. The dress was highlighted in the album artwork after Mitchell and her photographer, Norman Seeff, noticed a postcard of a nude female wearing a Mickey Mouse mask, posed in front of several Mickey-shaped balloons: the image was superimposed onto the dress, with several birds added to partially obscure the pubic area (and Mickey Mouse, done for obvious legal reasons). Accompanied by color photocopies of the album cover and inner sleeves, a copy of an Asylum Records publicity photo of Mitchell in the dress, and a photocopied letter of authenticity from Jimmy Bangley, former manager of A Star Is Worn.
