Description

Sargent discusses the placement of a copyright symbol

Distinguished American-born artist (1856-1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS signed “John S. Sargent,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, March 15, [no year]. Handwritten letter to Mr. Sorrey regarding the placement of a copyright symbol, in part: "I return the first-born envelope. It occurs to me on seeing it, that putting that © where it is incurs a great waste of space—the reason I made the horizontal branch of the cross so short was in order to put the whole design almost to the edge of the envelope. If it were not for that © it could go almost 1/4 of an inch farther to the left which would leave more room for the writing—I don't think it would hurt at all to put the © where I have indicated it in pencil. As it is now one would like to widen the horizontal branch of the cross by as much space as the © takes up, but of course that is out of the question, unless people have the good sense to write across the red, which they must do when there is a long name." In fine condition.
