Civil War-dated LS signed “Geo. B. McLellan,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Head-Quarters Army of the Potomac letterhead, October 11, 1862. Letter to "His Excellency E. D. Morgan, Governor of New York," recommending Lieutenant H. W. Powers for promotion. In part: "The valuable services of this officer have been unrewarded so far, because being detached, he is unable to secure the recommendations of regimental and brigade commanders; but this should not be a disadvantage…The 15th Regiment is an Engineer Regiment—and it has not been called upon to go in line of battle under fire, though it has rendered very necessary and valuable services. Lieut. Powers claim however to promotion to Captain in his regiment is as good as that of any other officer in it." Nicely cloth-matted and framed with a color copy of the front, an engraved portrait, a biographical caption to an overall size of 37 x 25, with a window in the backing for viewing the reverse. In fine condition, with light toning along the folds.
