Description

Longfellow sends thanks for the "welcome present of 'The Aeneid'"

ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” one page both sides, 4 x 6.5, September 27, 1881. Handwritten letter by the great poet, in part: "Mr. Goss called yesterday, and, brought me your welcome present of 'The Aeneid.' I hasten to thank you for it, and to say with how much interest I shall read it, not in an hour and a day, but from time to time, as the desire prompts me. Meanwhile I beg you to accept my cordial congratulations on your scholarly work. Let me with you also, for the future, what Selden calls 'a happy attendance of your chosen Muses,' by which I mean a translation of the Eclogues and the Georgics." Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a color copy of the front, an engraved portrait, and a biographical caption to an overall size of 28 x 22.75. In fine condition.
