Description

Baltimore lawyer (1779–1843) who was inspired to write the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British in 1814. ALS signed “F. S. Key,” one page, 7.75 x 8.75, no date. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, offering advice on a sensitive situation. In part: "After what passed as to allowing you six weeks to get certificates of your son's good conduct in the office, & recommendations for him…there is no danger of any other course being taken—it is impossible. I think therefore you ought at once to resign & apply for the office for your son, referring to the letters you have already given, & stating that you will procure others…If you do not resign, they may make that a cause for removing you & giving the appointment to the present applicant…I am sure it is best to resign at once." Beautifully cloth-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 25.5 x 18.25. In fine condition.
