Description

British colonial administrator (1712–1779) who served as provinces of New Jersey (1758–1760) and Massachusetts Bay (1760–1769). His uncompromising policies and harsh tactics in Massachusetts angered the colonists and were instrumental in the building of broad-based opposition within the province to the rule of Parliament in the events leading to the American Revolution. Partly-printed DS, signed “Fra. Bernard,” one page, 16.25 x 13, July 1, 1762. As Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, Bernard appoints Ithamar Brigham "to be Ensign of ye 2d Military Company of Foot, in s'd Town of Marlborough, whereof Jesse Rice is Captain." Neatly signed in the upper left by Governor Francis Bernard, and countersigned at the conclusion by Deputy Secretary John Cotton. The white paper seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. Impressively cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and biographical caption to an overall size of 36 x 24. In very good to fine condition, with old repairs to small areas for paper loss.
