Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (born 1777) from 1836 until his death in 1864. Before holding that office, Taney served as secretary of the treasury and attorney general. Partly-printed DS, signed “R. B. Taney,” one page, 7.75 x 3.75, March 13, 1812. Writ issued to the sheriff of Frederick County, Maryland, in part: "You are hereby commanded to take Raphael Darnall late of Frederick County yeoman if he shall be found in your Bailiwick, and him safe keep, so that you have his Body before the Judges of the next County Court." Signed along the bottom in ink by Taney. Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait and biographical plaque to an overall size of 21.75 x 19.75. In fine condition, with some minor edge loss.
