Description

Two Revolutionary War–dated documents pertaining to the 'Commander in Chief's Guard,' responsible for the safety of Gen. George Washington during the war. Includes: an ADS signed "W. Colfax Lt. Com'r, Comd'r in Chiefs Guard," one page, 7.5 x 4.5, January 22, 1781, in part: "This may certify that Peter Holt of Colo. Sam'l B. Webb's Conn't regiment was drafted from s'd reg't in March 1780, into the Comd'r in Chief's Guard; That he was inlisted in February 1777; that he is continued on the rolls of the said regiment and is reckoned as part of the quota of that state"; and a partly-printed DS signed by Peter Holt (with "his mark"), one page, 7.25 x 6.25, January 26, 1781, in part: "Received, or Pay-Table-Committee, their Order on the Treasurer, of this State, to secure the Payment of thirty five pounds, two shillings & 1 penny." Handsomely cloth-matted and framed with a portrait of Washington and a descriptive plaque to an overall size of 25 x 28. In fine condition.
