Description

Scarce commemorative cover with a cachet explaining the Apollo 13 oxygen tank explosion, postmarked at Cape Canaveral on the disaster date of April 14, 1970, signed in black felt tip by James Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. In very fine condition. One of the Apollo 13 Service Module's oxygen tanks ruptured at 55:54:53 (03:08 UTC on April 14, 10:08 PM EST, April 13). Swigert reported 26 seconds later, 'Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here,' then echoed Lovell, 'Houston, we've had a problem. We've had a Main B Bus undervolt.' After a harrowing swing around the moon, using the Lunar Module as an improvised lifeboat, the crew safely splashed down in the South Pacific on April 17th.
