Description

"Used in Training for Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin"—'Launch Emergency Procedures' checklist used by the full Apollo 11 crew in the Apollo Command Module Simulator

Training-used 5.5 x 8 single-sided page from the 'Launch Emergency Procedures’ section of the Apollo 11 Launch Operations Checklist used by the prime crew in the Apollo Command Module Simulator, signed cleanly on one side in blue ballpoint, "Used in Training for Apollo XI, Buzz Aldrin." The page is numbered "L, 5-11/12," and outlines procedures to take should fuel cells be lost at liftoff. In very fine condition.

Accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance signed by Buzz Aldrin, in part: "Accompanying this letter is a sheet numbered 5-11/12 from the CSM 107 (Apollo 11) Launch Operations Checklist, SKB32100080-306. It was part of the complete manual that was used in the Command Module Apollo Mission Simulator at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas. The sheet is from Section 5 titled: Launch Emergency Procedures.

The entire checklist, including this actual sheet, was used by all three Apollo 11 crew members: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and myself. We rehearsed steps from this section when training for spacecraft cabin fire and other emergency events. All pages in this section have a red tint to assist rapid location during such occurrences.

Side 5-11/12 has the remaining procedures to perform if we lost two fuel cells at liftoff. As commander, Neil would take control during such emergency conditions. Using this sheet, he would coordinate all needed activity with Mike and myself.

It was important to rehearse the flow of this activity in the simulator. It was an excellent learning device and the checklist was an important tool to insure our correct performance. This training was a key step which enabled our flight to make the first manned lunar landing on July 20, 1969."
