Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 20 x 16, May 1, 1914. President Wilson appoints Frank Laning of Fresno, California as “Register of the Land Office at Visalia, California.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Woodrow Wilson and countersigned by Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane. The lower left is embossed with the Department of the Interior stamp. In very good to fine condition, with some light creasing and soiling.

Laning (1859-1920), an Illinois native, married Nora Redden, and the couple had two children. He was also a farmer. A 1915 California newspaper article read that 'Homesteaders have no right to maintain possession of government land by driving off rival claimants through gun play, according to a ruling made by Register Frank Laning of the Visalia Land Office last week.'
