Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 22 x 17, April 10, 1895. President Cleveland appoints George W. Myers as the “Register of the Land Office at Miles City, Montana, vice Charles S. Wright, deceased.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Grover Cleveland and countersigned by Secretary of the Interior Hoke Smith. The embossed Department of the Interior seal is present to the lower left. In very good to fine condition, with some staining and light creasing in the margins.

George Washington Myers (1851-1931) was born in Andrew County, Missouri, and graduated from Ann Arbor Law College in 1876. He married Mary Elberta ‘Bertie’ Bowman of Andrew County in 1877, and after tiring of the legal business, he moved to Montana in 1879 to partner with a brother, Alfred, and William Martin in the cattle business in Miles City, a boomtown. Myers’ wife and their baby daughter, Mildred, stayed behind with his parents until they reluctantly joined him around 1880, traveling northwest by train and riverboat. The Myers couple had another daughter, Alma May ‘Mayblossom,’ born in 1884, who would later clerk for her father in the Miles City Land Office.
