Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17 x 14, April 22, 1884. President Arthur appoints Samuel H. Greene as “Postmaster at New Market, in the County of Rockingham, State of New Hampshire.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur and countersigned by Postmaster General Walter Q. Gresham. The original golden Post Office Department seal with red ribbon remains affixed to the lower left. In fine condition, with a couple of creases in the margins.
Samuel Henry Greene (1837-1911) was a respected physician in his hometown of Newmarket for more than four decades, visiting patients at home by horse and buggy. He served the community in several elected positions and fraternities. The staunch Republican served as postmaster for eight years under two Presidents.
