Description

Jefferson–Madison signed ship’s papers for the Remittance, bound for the Dutch West Indies

Partly-printed DS signed “Th: Jefferson” as president and “James Madison” as secretary of state, one page, 21 x 16.5, August 20, 1806. Four-language ship's pass issued to "William Coggeshall, master or commander of the Schooner called Remittance…lying at present in the port of Savannah, bound for St. Croix and laden with Tobacco, Nails & Lumber." Neatly signed at center in ink by President Thomas Jefferson, and countersigned below by Secretary of State James Madison. The original white paper seal affixed to the left side remains fully intact. In very good to fine condition, with some minor paper loss along the intersecting folds, not affecting either signature. United States ships carried four-language sea letters in the 18th and 19th centuries to show ownership, nationality, cargo, and destination. This is a spectacular example, featuring a most desirable combination of presidents, and boasting a particularly crisp Jefferson signature.
