Description

Presidential appointment for a "Second Lieutenant of a Cutter in the service of the United States for the Protection of the Revenue”

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 15 x 9.5, April 13, 1830. President Jackson appoints Moses Damrell as a "Second Lieutenant of a Cutter in the service of the United States for the Protection of the Revenue.” Signed boldly at the conclusion by Andrew Jackson and countersigned by Secretary of the Treasury Samuel D. Ingham. In very good to fine condition, with small stains, irregular toning, and multiple intersecting folds. Damrell’s service branch—the United States Revenue Cutter Service—was established in 1790 by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton as an armed maritime law enforcement service. Originally seen as a group of waterborne tax collectors, members of the organization served in a variety of capacities, eventually morphing into the U.S. Coast Guard.

Moses Damrell (1796-1833) was a New Hampshire native who served five months during the War of 1812 in the New Hampshire Militia defending the state’s coastline. He worked as a seaman in Portsmouth, a bustling waterfront town. After his Revenue Cutter Service appointment, Damrell worked aboard the Cutter Portsmouth and later the Cutter Madison.
