Description

DS as president, one page, 15.25 x 9.75, July 27, 1824. President Monroe grants William Means of Clark County, Illinois, a parcel of land "containing eighty acres, in the District of Palestine and State of Illinois." Nicely signed at the conclusion in ink by President James Monroe and countersigned by Commissioner of the General Land Office George Graham. The white paper seal affixed at the lower left remains intact. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, a few stains, and multiple vertical folds.

Virginia native William Means (1763-1848) was a Revolutionary War veteran who lived in South Carolina, Georgia and Ohio before finally settling his family in eastern Illinois on frontier land granted to him by President Monroe. During the war he volunteered in the 2nd Spartan Regiment of the SC Whig militia. He married Nancy McElroy in 1795 in SC, and after her death, he married Susan Seal Chenoweth in 1811 in OH. He had children with both wives.
