Description

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, October 27, 1897. Letter to Henry L. Johnson, in full: “Your letter of October 4th I find here on my return from New York where I was detained by sickness in my family. I also find a copy of the History of the 16th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers. Please allow me to express my thanks to you for your kindness in sending me this book, and for your good wishes and friendly expressions.” In fine condition.

Henry Johnson (1845-1927) was a New Hampshire native who volunteered in Company H of the 16th Infantry Regiment, which was organized for nine months of service in 1862 and 1863 in the Union Army. The regiment mostly served around New Orleans, and all casualties were from disease. Johnson worked in the US Postal Service in Washington, DC, for more than 30 years.
