Description

"I am hopeful that the Narcotics Commission will be able to work out a program that will be effective"—Ike writes to a noted New York humanitarian

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, December 11, 1954. Letter to legendary New York philanthropist and apparel manufacturer Irving Geist, in full: “This note is to bring you once again my warm thanks for the lovely and light-weight sweater-shirt. With unusual foresight, I took it home to Moaney and told him to be sure to pack it for the Augusta trip. It was nice to see you. I am hopeful that the Narcotics Commission will be able to work out a program that will be effective, and I am grateful for your suggestions. With warm regard, and best wishes for a happy holiday season.” In fine condition.

Irving Geist, who was called ‘a one-man philanthropic agency’ during World War II, headed over 20 philanthropic institutions and was a donor to Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish charities. Geist became a one-man anti-drug crusader who championed rehabilitation with an emphasis on youth problems. He sponsored Four Chaplains Memorial Placement Center, Inc., which sought the establishment of a narcotics hospital and farm while developing new buildings for young addicts to permit their segregation from more sophisticated adult narcotics users.
