Description

Three TLSs from Herbert Hoover, each one page on his personal 7.25 x 10.5 letterhead, dated between 1933 and 1952. The earliest, June 14, 1933, sent to his longtime secretary Lawrence Richey, in part: “Please find enclosed a memo on Publicity from a recent visitor in Washington. You might show it to Sanders…I don’t know who wrote it.” Sanders is likely James Everett Sanders, who Hoover appointed as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. The second, May 15, 1941, sent to Curt Karst, in part: “I am glad that you liked my statement to the American people. It seems to have contributed to clear the issue and make it what it really is—peace or war.” Curt Karst (1892-1942) was a German native who immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and became a citizen in 1925. He lived in New York City where he worked as a salesman and manager. Former President Hoover said in a May 11, 1941 radio address that the U.S. should not enter World War II. Karst agreed. The third letter, December 29, 1952, addressed to Marvin W. Singer, in part: “Many thanks for your letter…I deeply appreciate the friendly thought it conveys.” In overall fine condition, with several file holes to the earliest letter.
