TLS as Chief Justice, signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, October 30, 1929. Letter to Judge R. H. Knapp, in full: “I thank you for your desire that I should visit Miami, Florida, but I am sorry to say that my engagements and occupation are such that there is no likelihood of my doing so.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light stains. Richard H. Knapp (1841-1934), a New York native, lived in several states and worked a variety of jobs. He was a Justice of the Peace in Nebraska, a carpenter in North Dakota, a milk delivery driver in Minnesota, and later a financial secretary in Florida at the popular Miami Three Score and Ten Club, possibly where Taft was invited.
