LS as an Ohio congressman, signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 7.75, engraved Fortieth Congress, House of Representatives letterhead, March 12, 1869. Letter to Jacob Dolson Cox, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, in full: “Capt. S. H. Cole formerly a citizen of Portage Co. O. was a soldier of the 42nd O.V. I. and is a worthy and honorable man. I hope it will be possible for him to secure a clerkship.” In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, and a short fold split passing through the first letter of Garfield's last name.
Cole (1832-1886), a Pennsylvania native, served during the Civil War in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the Ohio Cavalry. After the war he worked as a carriage maker in Indianapolis, Indiana. His eyesight declined due to a war injury, and he lost his sight in 1875.
