Description

Free franked mailing envelope, 5.75 x 3.25, addressed in another hand to "Prof. B. A. Hinsdale, Hiram, Ohio," and franked in the upper right, "J. A. Garfield, MC." Postmarked at Congress on June 16th (no year). In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and creasing.

Burke Aaron Hinsdale (1837-1900) was an education pioneer who knew Garfield for 25 years. Hinsdale was a professor at, and later president of, Hiram College (formerly Western Reserve Eclectic Institute), where Garfield attended and taught before entering politics. Hinsdale wrote an 1882 book titled President Garfield and Education, a first edition copy of which accompanies this lot.
