Description

Rare census fund receipt signed by Brigham Young as "United States Marshal for the State of Deseret"

Manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 4.5, May 31, 1852. Neatly penned receipt signed by Young as "United States Marshal for the State of Deseret," a proposed state of the United States, promoted by leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who had founded settlements in what is today the state of Utah. In full: "Received of R. H. Williamson Esqr. Disbursing Agent 7th Census Fund thro' J. C. G. Kennedy Esq. Superintendent—sixty five dollars, amount heretofore advanced by me to ass't marshal E. D. Rich, & which sum has been deducted from the amount found due the said ass't marshal on settlement, with Dept. Interior." In very good to fine condition, with faint staining and light wrinkling.

This is a particularly interesting document: the Seventh Census of the United States was scheduled to be counted in 1850. In the provisional state of Deseret, Brigham Young was named the census agent, but before the census could be undertaken Congress created the Utah Territory. Young was again appointed as the territorial census agent, and the counting task was not begun until 1851.
