Description

Magnificent photograph of Picasso's portrait of muse Dora Maar, certified on the reverse by the abstract master: "The painting was painted (in 39 in Royan) by me, Picasso"

Wonderful vintage glossy 6.75 x 9 photo of Picasso's painting 'Woman with Green Hat,' certified and signed on the reverse in black crayon by the artist, "Le tableau a ete peint (en 39 in Royan) par moi, Picasso [The painting was painted (in 39 in Royan) by me, Picasso], Cannes le 25.4.61.” In fine condition.

Upon the outbreak of World War II in September 1939, Picasso left Paris to live in Royan on France's southern Atlantic coast. There he remained for an entire year with his new lover, Dora Maar, as well as Marie-Thérèse Walter and their daughter, Maya. In addition to her role as the subject of several paintings by Picasso, Maar had also photographed the successive stages of the creation of Picasso's powerful anti-war painting, 'Guernica.'

Picasso's painting 'Woman with Green Hat' now resides in The Phillips Collection, an art museum in Washington, D.C. From Phillips: 'In 1935, Pablo Picasso met Dora Maar, a young photographer among the Surrealists. Picasso had divorced his wife Olga Khokhlova, his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter had given birth to daughter Maya, and he was struggling with his artistic focus. Maar was an active participant in Picasso’s life as his companion, model, and mistress before and during World War II. In Picasso’s portraits of her from 1938 and early 1939, Maar’s face undergoes wrenching distortions, and she is often shown weeping, perhaps the result of their tumultuous time together. Woman with Green Hat, painted on October 29, 1939, is a hiatus from that dynamic. The uncharacteristic sculptural form of the head harkens back to Picasso’s interest in the art of non-Western cultures, while the wistful expression of the eyes, and the grayish blue and pink of her complexion suggest his Rose Period (1904–06).'
