Description

President Arthur ratifies “the Treaty between Corea and the United States” in 1883

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, January 29, 1883. President Arthur directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “my ratification affixed to the Treaty between Corea and the United States.” Signed prominently at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur. In fine condition.

This document assuredly pertains to the Joseon-United States Treaty of 1882 (also called the Shufeldt Treaty), which was negotiated between representatives of the United States and Korea in 1882. Made effective on May 19, 1883, the treaty, Korea’s first with a Western nation, established an understanding between the two countries of mutual friendship and assistance in case of attack. As part of the treaty, which required an American political presence in Korea, Lucius H. Foote became the first American minister to Korea, where he served from 1883 to 1885.
