Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 8 x 10, April 30, 1879. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to a Ceremonial Letter addressed to Queen Victoria.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. Affixed inside a presentation folder, which also bears a descriptive statement in an unknown hand: “April 30, 1879. Answer to a letter of and Congratulations to her Majesty Queen Victoria, to the Marriage of Duke of Connaught to Princess Louise of Prussia.” In fine condition.
Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He served as Governor General of Canada, the tenth since the Canadian Confederation, and the only British prince to do so. He married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia at St. George's Chapel Windsor on March 13, 1879.
