President Arthur proclaims a "treaty of peace, friendship and commerce" with Madagascar

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, March 13, 1883. President Arthur directs the Secretary of State to “cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the proclamation of the treaty of peace, friendship and commerce between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Madagascar, concluded the 13th day of May, 1881.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Chester A. Arthur. In fine condition. The United States and the Kingdom of Madagascar concluded a commercial convention in 1867, after which Queen Rasoherina and Prime Minister Rainilaiarivoy exchanged gifts with President Andrew Johnson, and, 14 years later, signed a treaty of peace, friendship, and commerce in 1881, which was officially proclaimed by President Arthur roughly two years later.
