Description

The ever-reclusive Salinger declines an "ungossipy, unexploitative" interview

TLS signed “JDS—,” 8.5 x 11, December 4, 1977. Letter politely declining an interview, stating that he has no opinions to make public in spite of assurances that "the piece you have in mind...would be ungossipy, unexploitative, etc." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked at White River Junction, Vermont. A fantastic letter in which the famously reclusive author shies away from the public spotlight—he tried to escape public exposure as much as possible, granting interviews only sporadically: in 1974, he had broken a public silence of over 20 years when he spoke with the New York Times to denounce the publication of an unauthorized collection of his early works.
