ALS as senator, one page, 8 x 10, February 25, 1828. Addressed from the Senate Chamber, a crisply penned handwritten letter from John Tyler to Secretary of War James Barbour, in part: “May I take the liberty of interceding with you on behalf of Master Richard Chamberlayne, son of Wm. B. Chamberlayne Esq’r., of Virginia, who is desirous of being admitted as a Cadet into the military academy at West Point. He has attained his fifteenth year and is as far advanced in scholastic studies as youths of his age ordinarily are. It is the purpose of his father if successful in this application to devote him to the country with the fond hope and expectation that he will be profitable to the service and in the fullness of time an honour to the military profession.” In very good to fine condition, with minor paper loss, and a short tear, to the left edge.
