Description

Scarce 1863 'Irish Brigade' letter replacing a lieutenant "killed at battle of Fredericksburg"

Irish nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders in the Rebellion of 1848 who later led the Union's Irish Brigade during the Civil War (1823-1867). Scarce Civil War–dated ALS signed “Robert Nugent, Col. 69 Regt. N.Y.C., Meagher's Irish Brigade,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, January 17, 1863. Handwritten letter to "Adjt. Gen'l Sprague," in part: "Lieut. John Dillon Mulhall, late of the Irish Papal Brigade, has been appointed by me as First Lieut. in the Sixty-Ninth Regt. N. Y. Vols., vice Bermingham, killed at battle of Fredericksburg. I would feel under many obligations should his Excellency Gov. Seymour confirm said appointment and forward his commission at your earliest convenience." Endorsed on the integral leaf by Meagher, in full: "Fully and most cordially approved by the undersigned. Thomas Francis Meagher, Brigadier General, Commanding the Irish Brigade." In fine condition, with small splits to folds.
