Civil engineer, real estate speculator, and a general in the Union Army (1834–1864) who, at various times, commanded divisions of XIII, XVI, and XVII Corps, leading the XVII Corps in the pursuit of a Confederate force through North Georgia into Alabama; taken severely ill with dysentery, he remained in command and on the field until too weak to go further. When told that he had but a few hours to live, he answered: 'I am not afraid to die, I have met death too often to be afraid of it now.' Uncommon 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Ransom in uniform by Geo. G. Rockwood of New York, boldly signed in ink, "T. E. G. Ransom, U. S. Vols." In fine condition, with slightly clipped corner tips.
