Description

Union general (1822–1895) promoted to major general on March 30, 1863. He was conspicuous in storming Marye's Heights during the Chancellorsville campaign, and at Gettysburg he was selected to command the 1st Corps after the death of John F. Reynolds. Unsigned 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of John Newton in uniform in a seated half-length pose. Published by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, from a “Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery." In fine condition.
