Civil War-dated ALS as an Ohio congressman, signed “J. A. Garfield,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, September 13, 1864. Addressed from Hamilton, Ohio, a handwritten letter to H. Y. Beebe of Ravenna, in full, "I am helping Gen. Schenck in his District and he goes to northern Ohio this week. I am sorry that I have an appointment on the day he is to be in Ravenna - for I would like to be there - Schenck is a glorious fellow and I hope he will have a good hearing - He speaks in Cleveland on the 15th and stops at the Weddell while there. I wish you would send him an invitation to stop with you while he is in Ravenna if it will be convenient for you. I know the General is weary – and a good deal worn out – and I know he would appreciate the hospitalities of your pleasant home very much – I hope you will not consider me impertinent in making this suggestion of course I have said nothing to the General – only have reminded him of seeing you in Washington and hoped he would meet you. Hoping to see you soon.” In fine condition. Robert C. Schenck (1809-1890) was a Union Army general during the Civil War and an American diplomatic representative to Brazil and the United Kingdom. He served two separate multi-term stints in the U. S. House of Representatives.
