Hardcover bound in the original cloth with gilt stamping on spine, 5.25 x 8, 334 pages (plus publisher’s advertisements at beginning and end). Book condition: Fair/None, with heavy foxing and dampstaining throughout, some warping to boards, rippling to cloth on the rear board, cloth split along edges of the spine, and the publisher's advertisements at rear partially detached from the binding. Released in an edition of just one thousand copies, this is a scarce example of the first book credited to Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the premier American authors of the 19th century.
